BREAKING BAD is the best thing on the Glowing Tube, by far — that’s the consensus of all kinds of critics and smart peoples on this rock circling the sun. The thing has its own subreddit, just like Batman and catsstandingup — that’s how big it is.
Who could’ve predicted the actor who played Hal on Malcolm in the Middle would transform into this amazing character, Walter White?
And this mashup here, of Walter White singing the old Sinatra — well, it doesn’t get any better than this.
I tip my hat to actor Bryan Cranston and the whole BREAKING BAD team. Amazing work on an amazing series.
I’m going to have to start watching Breaking Bad from the beginning – when I have time. Right now my obsession is Orphan Black on BBC America and I think it is the most brilliant show in the history of television. Try it! Let me know what you think. One season so far, ten can’t look away episodes.

“Breaking Bad” is not for every person. My husband’s college roommate, for example, dislikes unlikeable, irredeemable characters, while I have to point out that it’s exactly Walter White’s irredeemableness that makes him so can’t-tear-your-eyes-away compelling. It’s like watching a modern day King Lear or Macbeth unfold in more or less real time. Not unlike those classic tragic figures, it’s not a pretty spiral to watch, but it’s some of the best characterization I’ve seen on television in a long, long time.
The series benefits from a solid supporting cast, too; Jonathan Banks’s Mike Ehrmantrout alone makes the show worth watching. But, you’re right, Julia: you definitely need to watch it from the beginning. You’ll know within the first 2-3 episodes if it’s for you. If not, that’s cool. If so, prepare yourself for a crazy ride.

I suspect what makes the character so compelling is his victim/hero/anti-hero/villain transformation.
